LET’s volunteers receive humanitarian logistics training in Indonesia

Twenty eight logistics specialists from Agility, UPS and TNT attended the fourth joint training program for the Logistics Emergency Teams (LET’s) in Jakarta, Indonesia. These volunteers were trained on the essentials of humanitarian logistics with a strong emphasis on ethics, health, safety and security.

The LETs program was launched in January 2008 under the auspices of the World Food Program (WFP) in its role as the Global lead of the Logistics Cluster to provide coordinated, industry-wide emergency support to humanitarian organizations.

Over the last three years, Agility has deployed 15 LET’s volunteers to support Logistics Cluster activities in relief operations in Indonesia, Myanmar and most recently in Chile. The volunteers supported activities that ranged from reconstruction and recovery efforts, transportation of food and medical aid to offering logistics consultancy.

Faced with the challenge of managing a tough job with limited resources, humanitarian agencies benefit greatly from the technical knowledge of the LETs volunteers.

Frank Clary, Agility’s senior manager for Corporate Social Responsibility who attended the training said: “We have a great program founded on great employee volunteers and very good partners in the WFP, TNT and UPS.  It’s always a pleasure to see people functioning as a professional, technically qualified team.  This program can make a real difference to those in need.”
