Press Release
Statement to the Wall Street Journal
18 October 2007
The Public Warehousing Company - K.S.C. (PWC) is proud of its work to provide food and other services in support of the brave men and women in the U.S. military who are stationed in the Middle East. More than 30 PWC employees have been killed and 200 injured carrying out the extremely dangerous work of providing food for U.S. troops in a war zone, primarily in attacks on convoys that have destroyed more than 300 trucks and damaged another 700.
PWC's service has been timely, reliable and cost effective throughout its work on these competitively awarded contracts, and its performance has been unparalleled. Since 2006, the company's "fill rates" - the number of cases of food accepted compared with the number ordered - were consistently more than 99 percent, a number that exceeds the fill rates of U.S. domestic service providers. That means that PWC was more successful in delivering food and other items to the military in a hostile war zone than other vendors have been within the safe environs of the continental U.S. While we are not perfect, we are extremely proud of our performance.
In routine government audits of PWC's work, the company has received some of the highest audit scores ever given by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And its customer, the Defense Supply Center Philadelphia (DSCP), has recognized PWC for superior customer service three years in a row.
The fact that PWC has, since 2003, been competitively awarded two successive food supply contracts from the U.S. military is direct evidence of its ability to provide high quality services and deliver competitive pricing - pricing that includes not only the cost of the food it supplies but also the costs associated with storing, handling and delivering it at multiple locations in a war zone. The company is constantly working with its suppliers to obtain the best value for the U.S. government.
PWC is committed to being a responsible government contractor. The company has always cooperated with the reviews, inspections, audits and inquiries necessary to ensure taxpayer dollars are being spent appropriately. PWC welcomes a full and impartial review of its work and its performance under these government contracts, and will continue to cooperate fully with all such inquiries.
PWC is the first company in Kuwait, and in the Gulf Cooperation Council - which includes Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates - to have a U.S. government contractor corporate compliance program and comprehensive Code of Ethics. PWC has proactively reported wrongdoing it has discovered, including a second-tier supplier's apparent overcharges to the government. PWC also notified the government of a suspected corruption ring within the U.S. military in Kuwait that led to a government investigation, and played a pivotal role in a successful sting operation that stemmed from the investigation.
